Leaving Czechia

Closing your registrations properly so that arrears do not follow you.

What this actually is

Leaving without deregistering is the most common cause of unexpected debts. Health insurance in particular continues to accrue until you formally end it.

Who it applies to

Anyone permanently ending their stay in Czechia.

When it's required

Before or immediately after your departure.

Step by step

  1. 1

    End your health insurance

Notify your insurer and return the card; keep the confirmation.

  2. 2

    Close self-employment if applicable

Suspend or cancel the trade licence and notify tax and social security.

  3. 3

    File any final tax return

A final return may be required for the part-year.

  4. 4

    Close contracts and accounts

Lease, utilities, mobile and bank accounts do not end automatically.

  5. 5

Report the end of your residence

Tell the authority that issued your residence document.

Documents to bring

  • Identity document
  • Health insurance card
  • Lease termination confirmation

Who decides

Your insurer, the tax office, and the residence authority
