How banking works here

Opening an account, account number format, and paying bills.

  • Most banks open an account for a foreign national with a passport and proof of address; some also want proof of income.
  • Czech account numbers have an optional prefix, a main number, and a four-digit bank code after a slash.
  • Bills are usually paid by bank transfer using a variable symbol (variabilní symbol) as the payment reference — get it wrong and the payment will not be matched.
  • QR codes on invoices fill in payment details automatically in Czech banking apps.
  • Direct debits exist but standing orders are more common for rent.
