Being registered for social and health insurance by your employer
What your employer must file when you start, and how to check it actually happened.
What this actually is
For employees, registration with the Czech Social Security Administration (ČSSZ) and with your chosen health insurer is your employer's legal duty, not yours. Problems usually appear later — an unpaid doctor's bill or a gap in your insurance record — so it is worth checking the registration happened rather than assuming.
Who it applies to
Anyone employed under a Czech employment contract, regardless of nationality.
When it's required
Your employer must report your start to ČSSZ and to your health insurer within days of your first day.
Step by step
- 1
Tell your employer which health insurer you use
You choose the insurer; the employer reports to it. Say so in writing on your first day.
- 2
Check you received an insurance card
Your insurer issues a card once registration is processed. Chase it if nothing arrives within a few weeks.
- 3
Keep your payslips
Deductions for sociální pojištění (social insurance) and zdravotní pojištění (health insurance) show the registration is live.
- 4
Verify your record online
ČSSZ lets you view your insurance record once you can log in with a recognised identity.
Documents to bring
- Employment contract
- Identity or residence document
- Rodné číslo or assigned identification numberYour insurer or ČSSZ assigns one if you do not have it
