Applying for permanent residence
Trvalý pobyt — permanent residence — after five years of continuous residence, and the shorter routes that exist.
What this actually is
Permanent residence (trvalý pobyt) ends the cycle of renewing permits, gives free access to the labour market and brings you into the public health insurance system as a resident. The usual condition is five years of continuous lawful residence; some family and humanitarian situations qualify sooner.
Who it applies to
EU/EEA citizens and third-country nationals who have lived in Czechia lawfully and continuously, in most cases for five years.
When it's required
Once the qualifying period is complete; you may apply while your current permit is still valid.
Step by step

Count your qualifying residence
Long absences can break continuity. Check how your time abroad is counted before applying.

Sit the language examination if required
Third-country applicants take a state-recognised A2 Czech examination and receive a certificate.

Assemble proof of income and accommodation
You are normally asked to show a stable income and secured housing.

File the application in Czechia
Applications are submitted in person at the Ministry of the Interior.

Attend for biometrics and collect the card
Statutory decision periods are long — plan around your current permit's expiry.
