Registering your residence as an EU/EEA citizen

What EU and EEA citizens need to do after arriving, and when a registration certificate is worth having.

What this actually is

EU and EEA citizens do not need a residence permit to live in Czechia. There is a short reporting duty after arrival, and an optional certificate of temporary residence (potvrzení o přechodném pobytu) that many offices, employers and banks ask to see.

Who it applies to

Citizens of EU and EEA member states and Switzerland who intend to stay in Czechia for more than 30 days.

When it's required

The reporting duty applies within 30 days of arrival if you intend to stay longer than 30 days. Your accommodation provider may do this for you.

Step by step

Confirm which route applies to you
Check whether you are treated as an EU citizen, a family member of an EU citizen, or a third-country national. The route differs substantially.

Report your presence
If your landlord or hotel has not reported your stay, report it yourself to the Ministry of the Interior office responsible for your area.

Decide whether to request a certificate
A certificate of temporary residence is optional but frequently requested by employers, banks and insurers.

Book an appointment
Appointments at Ministry of the Interior offices are normally booked online in advance. Walk-in capacity is limited.

Attend and submit your documents
Bring originals. Officials may ask for a Czech translation of documents issued abroad.
