Insuring a vehicle (povinné ručení)
Compulsory third-party motor insurance, the green card, and what happens if you let it lapse.
What this actually is
Every vehicle registered in Czechia must carry third-party liability insurance (povinné ručení) from the day it is registered, whether or not it is driven. Insurers report cover to the Czech Insurers' Bureau, and a gap triggers a charge to the guarantee fund on top of any fine.
Who it applies to
Anyone who owns or operates a vehicle registered in Czechia.
When it's required
Before or on the day the vehicle is registered to you, and continuously afterwards.
Step by step
- 1
Arrange cover before registration
The registry asks for proof of insurance when the vehicle is registered.
- 2
Keep the green card
The green card is the proof of insurance you must be able to show; digital versions are accepted.
- 3
Consider comprehensive cover separately
Havarijní pojištění (comprehensive cover) is optional and separate from the compulsory policy.
- 4
Deregister the vehicle if you stop insuring it
Simply cancelling the policy while the vehicle stays registered creates a liability to the guarantee fund.
Documents to bring
- Vehicle registration certificate (technický průkaz)
- Identity or residence document
- Previous no-claims confirmationOptional, but reduces the premium
Who decides
Your insurer, with oversight by the Czech Insurers' Bureau (ČKP)
