How Czech addresses work
Two house numbers, a postcode format that trips people up, and what to write on a form.
A Czech address usually looks like: Vinohradská 1511/230, 130 00 Praha 3. The street comes first, then the number, then a five-digit postcode written as three digits, a space, and two digits.
Why there are two numbers
The first number (1511) is the descriptive number — a permanent identifier for the building within its cadastral area. The second (230) is the orientation number, which follows the street sequence and is what you actually use to find the door.
Post and couriers rely on the orientation number. Official forms and the property register usually want the descriptive number.
Districts
- Praha 1 to Praha 10 are administrative districts, not the same as neighbourhood names.
- A neighbourhood such as Vinohrady can sit across more than one district.
- Postcodes beginning 1 belong to Prague.
