Keeping a dog in Prague: registry, dog fee and public transport

The national dog registry, the city dog fee you must report within 15 days, and the rules on trams and the metro.

Central Dog Registry (Centrální evidence psů)

  • Since July 2026 this is the only official national dog registry, set up by the Veterinary Act and run by the Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons. Registration in a private database does not meet the legal duty.
  • It is not automatic: your vet enters your dog on request. Puppies must be microchipped and registered before they go to a new owner; older dogs must be registered at the next rabies vaccination at the latest.
  • After buying a dog, moving, or changing phone number, ask a vet to update the record. You can report a lost dog and update contact details yourself at registrpsu.gov.cz.

Dog fee (místní poplatek ze psů)

  • Payable for every dog older than 3 months, by whoever the dog lives with — including foreign nationals registered to live in Prague.
  • Report the dog (ohlášení) within 15 days of getting it, to the office of the city district where you are registered. You must report even if you are exempt.
  • Rates are set citywide by Prague ordinance 23/2003: 1,500 Kč a year for one dog, 2,250 Kč for each further dog. Lower rates apply to dogs kept in a family house (600 Kč in Praha 1–15 and 17, 300 Kč elsewhere) and to people over 65 or living only on a pension (200 Kč).
  • Holders of a ZTP or ZTP/P disability card, blind people and some others are fully exempt.
  • Many districts let you report online through Portál Pražana; otherwise use your district office.

Dogs on public transport (PID)

  • A dog either travels in a fully closed carrier with a solid, leak-proof base, or on a short lead with a safe muzzle on. A lead and muzzle are also needed in a bag that is not fully closed.
  • A carrier up to 25 × 45 × 70 cm travels free. A dog on a lead, or in a bigger carrier, costs 23 Kč (electronic) or 25 Kč (paper) in Prague.
  • If you hold a valid season ticket or a 24-hour ticket for the whole journey, the dog travels free (not on PID trains).
  • Only one dog per tram, bus or trolleybus (assistance and guide dogs excepted). Signal the driver before boarding and use the door with the pram/dog symbol. The driver can refuse a dog.
