Glossary

matrika (matriční úřad)

Pronounced ma-tri-ka

In one line

The registry office that records births, marriages, partnerships and deaths.

Where you meet it

It issues birth and marriage certificates, and it is where you arrange a wedding or a partnership.

The fuller explanation

The matrika is a department of a municipal office — in Prague, of a district town hall. Which one handles your case depends on where the event happened or will happen, not on where you live. It is also the office that decides which foreign documents it will accept and in what form, so ask it directly rather than relying on second-hand lists.
