Prague Explained

Glossary

podnájem

Pronounced pod-nigh-em

In one line

A sublet — renting from a tenant rather than from the owner.

Where you meet it

Many Prague adverts are sublets, and the word is often used loosely for any rental.

The fuller explanation

A sublet needs the owner's consent. Your rights depend on the head lease, so if that ends, yours ends with it. Subletting a municipally-owned flat is normally not allowed at all, and a tenant who does it can lose the flat — taking the whole household with them.
