Child benefits and family allowances
What state family support exists, who can generally claim it, and where you apply.
What this actually is
State family support (státní sociální podpora) is administered by the Labour Office, not by your municipality or employer. The main benefits parents ask about are parental allowance (rodičovský příspěvek), paid to a parent caring for a young child; child allowance (přídavek na dítě), an income-tested benefit for lower-income families; and maternity benefit (peněžitá pomoc v mateřství), which is different — it comes from sickness insurance and is paid by the social security administration, not the Labour Office.
Who it applies to
Parents living in Czechia; eligibility depends on your residence status, where your family is habitually resident, and for maternity benefit on your insurance record.
When it's required
Claim as soon as you are eligible — benefits are generally not paid far into the past.
Step by step
- 1
Check which benefit fits your situation
Parental allowance for caring for a young child; child allowance if your family income is low; maternity benefit if you have the required insurance record.
- 2
Apply to the Labour Office branch for your address
Applications can be filed online with an electronic identity or a data box, or on paper at the branch.
- 3
For maternity benefit, go through your employer or the social security administration
It is a sickness insurance benefit, applied for on a doctor's form, not a Labour Office benefit.
- 4
Report changes
Income, employment, household or address changes must be reported; overpayments are recovered.
Documents to bring
- Child's birth certificate
- Identity and residence documents for the parents and child
- Proof of income, for income-tested benefits
- Bank account details
Who decides
Labour Office of the Czech Republic (state social support); Czech Social Security Administration for maternity benefit
Worth knowing
- Amounts, income thresholds and the total parental allowance cap are set by law and revised periodically — we deliberately do not quote figures here. Take the current numbers from the Labour Office.
- Parental allowance is a total sum drawn over time at a rate you choose within limits, rather than a fixed monthly payment.

Eligibility for family benefits is decided case by case and is sensitive to residence status and cross-border work. Treat this as orientation, not a determination.
