It is how any open-ended tenancy is ended, by either side.

The fuller explanation

Notice must be in writing and delivered — by hand against a signature or by registered post. Notice periods are set in the contract and by law, commonly three months from the start of the following month. A landlord must state a legally allowed reason and tell you about your right to object.
